Choose the joint filler before choosing a coverage rate
The bag calculator applies only after the paving system and exact jointing product are confirmed compatible. Polymeric sand is not a default purchase for every paver project.
If the design specifies joint aggregate for a permeable pavement, do not substitute the example sand or its square-feet-per-bag rate. Follow the system selection and material-order guide, then ask the selected system supplier for the joint-aggregate quantity method.
For an approved polymeric product, record the paver type, joint width and depth, supported installation method, bag weight and matching coverage-chart row. If any of these are unknown, resolve them with the manufacturer before ordering. Run the calculator's low and high coverage values only within that confirmed category; a range from an incompatible product is not a useful purchasing range.

How much polymeric sand for 400 square feet?
There is no universal bag count for 400 sq ft. With an illustrative matching-label range of 40–60 sq ft per bag and 5% extra, the calculation is 400 × 1.05 = 420 sq ft. At 40 sq ft per bag, round 10.5 up to 11 bags; at 60, buy 7 bags. The four-bag difference is coverage uncertainty, not a change in patio size.
Use both endpoints only when they apply to the same product, bag size and joint conditions. If your joints match only the lower-coverage chart category, 7 bags is not a valid alternative. Choosing the lower coverage buys more bags; confirm the category, test-area consumption and unopened-bag return terms before deciding.
Find the right coverage before entering it
- Record the exact brand, product and bag size. A brand name alone, including DOMINATOR, does not identify the correct coverage.
- Match your joint width, filled depth and paver format to that product’s chart. Do not enter coverage for another bag size or for bedding sand.
- Enter the lower matching coverage above and the higher endpoint in the optional field. If the label gives one figure, leave the optional field at 0.
- Enter the actual price per bag. The material subtotal uses the conservative bag count; multiply the higher-coverage count by the same price separately if comparing costs.
For irregular patios, total the paved area first. You can enter that area as Length and 1 as Width; these inputs are an area equivalent, not a drawing. For a partially filled repair, area alone cannot measure missing joint depth: use product guidance or a representative test rather than assuming new-installation coverage. This calculator does not select a compatible product or activation method.

How to calculate
Coverage changes with joint width, joint depth and paver shape. The 50 sq ft per bag input is an arithmetic example, not a product recommendation.

Length (ft): 16 · Width (ft): 12 · Product coverage (sq ft / bag): 50 · Extra material (%): 10.

Measure the right surfaces
Measure the paved area and identify the exact bag size, joint width, joint depth and paver format. Read the matching coverage row on the chosen product’s label. Enter coverage in square feet per bag, not square feet per pound. For a range, calculate both ends and compare whole bags.
A second example you can check
For 180 sq ft, 60 sq ft per bag and 5% extra, the order is 180 × 1.05 ÷ 60 = 3.15, rounded to 4 bags. If the same project falls into a coverage category of only 40 sq ft per bag, the order rises to 5 bags. That difference comes from the product coverage assumption, not from changing the patio size.
Where estimates go wrong
Choosing a generous coverage number from the wrong joint-width category can under-order. Mixing a per-bag figure for one bag weight with a different product size has the same effect. The calculator cannot infer a compatible sand or activation method from area alone.
Build your supplier order
Confirm coverage, joint compatibility, installation temperature, surface dryness and activation instructions with the exact product documentation. Keep a reserve decision separate from the calculated minimum, and ask whether unopened bags can be returned.

Should I enter two coats?
No. This is a joint-fill bag calculator. The coverage supplied by the manufacturer already represents the intended joint filling.
Can the bag count be exact?
It is exact only for the coverage you enter. Real joint geometry and packing make coverage uncertain, so comparing a label range is more informative.
