How to calculate

Start with a rectangular perimeter, then subtract edges that your installation plan does not require you to restrain. The result assumes cut pieces can be reused.

Worked example

Length (ft): 16 · Width (ft): 12 · Unrestrained perimeter to exclude (ft): 0 · Length per piece (ft): 6 · Extra material (%): 10.

Measure the right surfaces

Measure each edge that actually requires restraint. For a rectangle, begin with twice the length plus twice the width and subtract only the sections excluded by the installation plan. A building wall is not automatically an acceptable substitute for restraint; confirm the detail.

A second example you can check

A 12 × 10 ft patio has 44 ft of perimeter. Excluding an approved 10 ft edge leaves 34 ft. With 5% extra, 35.7 ft is needed; 6 ft pieces produce an area-independent minimum of 6 pieces, or 36 ft purchased.

Where estimates go wrong

The formula pools usable lengths. Two separate 7 ft runs need 14 ft in total, but their cut plan may not use three 6 ft pieces efficiently. Curves, corners and connection requirements can also prevent a leftover from serving another run.

Build your supplier order

Write down each uninterrupted run before buying. Confirm straight or flexible pieces, connectors, corner details and the fastener schedule for the substrate. Stakes are not included in the displayed piece count.
