Check the grass and installation plan before buying pallets
The lowest package price is useful only if the sod suits the site and can be installed in usable condition. First identify the grass species or mixture, sun and shade conditions, intended wear, and the time and water available for establishment.
University of California IPM's sod-establishment guidance emphasizes matching turfgrass to its use and geographic setting. University of Minnesota Extension compares seed and sod and explains that the seller should be able to identify the sod varieties. Its species advice is regional, not a nationwide grass prescription.
Three decisions before the quantity comparison
- Keep or repair existing turf: if only patches need replacement, measure those patches separately. Do not use the entire lawn footprint just because it is easier to measure.
- Seed or sod: compare feasible establishment methods for your location and timing. Sod provides an immediate lawn surface but costs more than seed in the Minnesota guidance; this calculator does not estimate seed rates or establish that sod is the best choice.
- Delivery readiness: confirm soil preparation, water access, unloading and the installer's available capacity before booking harvest and delivery. Follow the grower's timing instructions for your product and conditions rather than treating sod as material that can wait indefinitely.
Make the package comparison a feasible order
Use the pallet, piece and mixed-order worksheet only for the same selected grass product and compatible package formats. Ask whether partial pallets or individual pieces are actually sold, whether pallet and piece orders come from matching stock, and whether fees or minimums differ. A lower calculated material subtotal does not settle those questions.
Illustrative decision: a whole-pallet offer has a lower unit price, but the surplus cannot be installed in your prepared area and the grower will not accept returns. Compare the usable piece or mixed order before choosing the pallet. Do not count excess live turf as a future saving unless you have an appropriate place and timely plan to install it.
- Sketch the net planting area and any repair patches using the measurement guide.
- Record grass identity, package coverage and delivery terms from the grower. Enter cutting allowance separately from measured area.
- Compare the available package options and download their quantities. Add tax, delivery, unloading, site preparation and installation separately where not included.
- If grass suitability or delivery readiness is unresolved, hold the purchase and resolve it with your local extension service or grower. If soil amendment or imported soil is proposed, use the soil-selection check before ordering a volume.

Compare pallets, pieces and a mixed order
A rounded pallet count can leave a large surplus. Use the actual coverage and prices from one supplier to compare buying formats. The example inputs describe arithmetic, not a recommended sod product or current market price.

These options assume the supplier sells the same product in both formats with no minimum order, handling surcharge or quantity discount. Confirm availability and the delivery charge for each option before buying. Tax, installation and site preparation are excluded.
Worked example: less waste does not always mean lower cost
A 1,000 sq ft lawn with 5% cuts needs 1,050 sq ft. With 450 sq ft pallets and 10 sq ft pieces, buy 3 pallets (1,350 sq ft), 105 pieces (1,050 sq ft), or 2 pallets plus 15 pieces (1,050 sq ft).
At invented prices of $220 per pallet, $6 per piece and $50 delivery, the totals are $710, $680 and $580. The mixed order wins. Change only the piece price to $20: the mixed order costs $790 and 3 whole pallets cost $710. The less-waste option is now more expensive. These examples exclude tax and installation.
Measure planted areas only; subtract beds, paths and other exclusions before entering the area. Set the allowance for your actual cuts. Coverage is not proof that individual offcuts fit your lawn edges. Verify product dimensions, grade and delivery timing with the supplier.

Pallet sizes vary. Replace the sample coverage with the actual supplier figure; cuts and irregular borders are represented by the extra-material percentage.

Measure the right surfaces
Measure the lawn’s net area after subtracting paths, beds and hardscape. Supplier coverage per pallet must refer to the exact sod package. Choose an extra percentage based on the intended cut layout and keep it separate from the area measurement.
A second example you can check
A 30 × 20 ft lawn has 600 sq ft. With 5% cutting allowance, the requirement is 630 sq ft. If the supplier sells only 450 sq ft pallets, the tool returns two pallets and 900 sq ft purchased. The 270 sq ft difference may justify asking about partial pallets or individual pieces.
Where estimates go wrong
Rounding to a whole pallet can create much more surplus than the chosen waste percentage. That surplus is a packaging effect, not a recommendation to enlarge the lawn or stack excess turf. Delivery and installation timing matter to a perishable material.
Build your supplier order
Ask for square feet per pallet, piece dimensions, partial-pallet options, harvest and delivery timing, unloading arrangements and return policy. Soil preparation and establishment guidance come from the turf supplier and local conditions.
Sod: practical questions
Does every pallet cover 450 sq ft?
No. It is an editable arithmetic example. Use the coverage confirmed by your actual supplier.
Can I buy individual pieces instead?
Ask the supplier. Divide the adjusted area by the stated area per piece and round once; do not assume the pallet estimate is the only purchase option.
